Fake news poses a fundamental threat to the proper functioning of any system of representative government. Yet attempts to regulate it, by government or platforms, also pose clear risks from a democratic perspective. How should we respond to this dilemma?
In this seminar, Professor James Weinstein (Arizona State University) explores these questions in the context of recent debates in the United States and elsewhere.
The event – co-hosted by the UNSW Allens Hub for Technology, Law and Innovation and the Gilbert + Tobin Centre of Public Law – will be run in hybrid mode at the UNSW Law and Justice Faculty (Level Two staff seminar room and online).
Speaker Biography:
James Weinstein is the Dan Cracchiolo Chair in Constitutional Law in the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law, a faculty fellow in the Center for Law, Science and Innovation at Arizona State University and an associate fellow with the Centre for Public Law at the University of Cambridge. Professor Weinstein's areas of academic interest are Constitutional Law, especially Free Speech, as well as Jurisprudence and Legal History.
