Hub Director says Australia needs a robust cybersecurity overhaul – not whack-a-mole bans on apps like TikTok

In her recent article for The Conversation, Hub Director Lyria Bennett Moses critically reviews the current governmental ban on the use of TikTok on government devices.

As the ban focuses on data from government staff being impacted on their governmental devices, the author asks, could not that same data be garnered when those same people use the app on their personal devices? Professor Bennett Moses directs readers to consider that the larger problems of digital security and foreign interference is ultimately much bigger than a single app or the use of government devices.

The risk, she says, is both in government and beyond.

AS the article continues, Professor Bennett Moses poses some alternative avenues which could be taken to approach this significant risk, such as a new and more effective cybersecurity strategy, suggestions for a stronger privacy act and more.
