Hub Director calls for strengthening of Australia’s disclosure laws in light of the most detailed record of Australian data breaches to date

Hub Director Lyria Bennett Moses recently contributed her insights as a cybersecurity law expert in an article published by the ABC which shines a light on the comprehensive overview of the data breaches affecting Australian consumers, taken from recently published data shared as part of the official record of data breaches reported to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC).

The article notes that of those data breaches which have gained the most recent media attention, the true number and impact of data breaches on Australian consumers is much larger and considerably more mysterious.

In particular, the article highlights the fact than many of the breaches are never fully disclosed to the public, indicating as Professor Bennett Moses says, this also means that organisations who have experienced a breach are “only going to know what information they’re adding to the ecosystem, not what information is already out there”.

To protect Australian consumers, she says Australia’s disclosure laws need to be strengthened.
